Virginia — Today, Judge Hanen of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas has blocked new DACA applications from being granted while allowing current recipients to continue renewals. Over 81,000 new petitions for undocumented youth to gain DACA are no longer able to be processed.

Monica Sarmiento, Executive Director of the Virginia Coalition for Immigrant Rights, said:

“For years we have seen the courts challenging DACA and anti-immigrant legislators blocking legislation that would give immigrant families a pathway to citizenship. The ruling showed us that DACA is not enough for our communities.

Without permanent protection, our families are not free from deportation. This is the year the Biden-Harris Administration and Congress need to give undocumented youth, farmworkers, TPS holders, and essential workers a pathway to citizenship through budget reconciliation. We need a comprehensive solution for all immigrants.”
