The Virginia Coalition for Immigrant Rights is a non-partisan and non-profit organization. In early 2013 longtime immigrant rights activists and organizers came together to join the nationwide push to create a path to citizenship for 11 million immigrants. While many of us had worked together informally for years we all realized that we needed to build a real and ongoing coalition to fight for immigrants’ rights at the federal, state and local levels. Over the next two years we have been steadily building our collective capacity and power. In January we hired our first employee Monica Sarimiento who is our statewide coordinator. Over the last year we’ve organized regional meetings in Charlottesville, Roanoke and Northern Virginia. We’ve fought and won in-state tuition for Dreamers.
Now VACIR has begun the exciting and difficult task of ramping up statewide capacity so that over 90,000 Virginians can apply for normalized legal status through Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) and Deferred Action for Parents of Americans (DAPA). Together we are creating a pipeline for civic engagement and for immigrants’ power and rights. Join us!
